NICORETTE®Cut Down Then Stop is designed to help you become completely smoke-free in a maximum of 9 months. You can tailor the program to suit your own needs. The following 4 steps provide a guideline:
Step 1
Set a target and the date you want to achieve it by
(0-6 weeks*)
For best results, aim to at least halve the number of cigarettes. So, if you smoke 15 or 16 cigarettes each day, replace 8 of them (i.e. every second cigarette) with NICORETTE® Gum or NICORETTE® Inhaler to manage your cravings.
*If you have not cut down in 6 weeks ask your Healthcare Professional e.g. Doctor, Pharmacist or Nurse for advice.
Step 2
Continue cutting down
(6 weeks up to 6 months)
Every smoker is different and you should cut down at your own pace. For example, instead of 7 or 8 cigarettes each day, cut down to 3 or 4, then stop completely. As you cut down on cigarettes, your desire to smoke should also reduce. But remember, NICORETTE® Gum and NICORETTE® Inhaler are on hand whenever you need them to help manage your cravings.
Step 3
Stop all cigarettes as soon as you feel able
(within 9 months*)
You should now feel ready to throw all your cigarettes away. The decision is still a tough one to make, so use NICORETTE® Gum or NICORETTE® Inhaler to manage cigarette cravings.
*If you have not managed to stop smoking by 9 months ask you Healthcare Professional e.g. Doctor, Pharmacist or Nurse for advice.
Step 4
Yippee... you've beaten the cigarette.
(within 12 months)
You've successfully cut down then stopped smoking. Over the next 3 months, you should also give up the NICORETTE® Gum or NICORETTE® Inhaler. You can celebrate by throwing away any old cigarette packets, ash trays and lighters you may have at home. But it's worth keeping any unused NICORETTE® Gum or NICORETTE® Inhalers just to manage any cravings you may have in the weeks ahead.
